Media servers

I'm trying to create a media server, though I've never completely built a computer ground up. Anyone have any advice on what I should buy and what I should prioritize on getting?

a media server for public online sharing
or just a personal media server you stash all your digital goods on?

a good net work card 100/1000
lots of hard drive space
and ample ram 4gb or more in a 64bit os
get a motherboard with either an nvidia integrated graphics or ati variety.
to negate having to shell out for a video card.
A good power supply if its going to be a 24hour 7days a week operation
